Scientists document the temperature of soil, one layer above permafrost

Global warming is causing vast areas of permafrost to thaw. Research by ACE just published in Nature Communications and discussed in UQ news reports a novel family of microbes that flourish as permafrost thaws. By genome sequencing and measuring its activity at Stordalen Mire, in northern Sweden, we were able to show that is responsible for producing large amounts of methane at the study site and other sites globally. This likely creates a positive feedback to climate change, speeding the thaw of permafrost. But at least now we know a little bit more about the microbial mechanics of our changing home.
